"For me, painting is a nonverbal response to visual experiences that interest and delight me.  While we can (and must) talk about technical and formal challenges and skills, for me the essence of painting – as too with dance and music– is that this form of expression and communication reaches places that words can’t."

Douglas Irvine is Emeritus Professor of Political Studies, University of Natal (now UKZN). He took early retirement from the University in 1996 to work as a consultant on development issues, better regulation and good governance in South Arica and sub-Saharan Africa.  Following his second retirement at the end of 2010, he joined Ricky Burnett’s art classes to pursue an interest in painting which had been placed in parentheses for some 50 years.
