I never want to use a reference but rather to paint what wells up in me. There was a breakthrough when I changed to from oil to acrylic paint, where the plasticity of the medium enabled me to feel shape and texture. Using a palette knife gave me a new freedom to allow my imagination and emotions and the paint to lead me.
